Extensive plans for 2015

2015 promises to be another busy and exciting year for the Programme as we look to be build upon the excellent start in 2014, which resulted in us receiving two prestigious national awards.

Tours…

This month will be spent preparing for the spring tour season which is already fully-booked with more than 400 schools from across the country set to travel to the battlefields of the Western Front. The team are busy finalising itineraries and creating new resources and materials with which to engage students and inspire teachers. Tours in 2015 will also see groups visiting battlefield sites which have an association with events of 100 years ago, such as Neuve Chapelle and other ‘forgotten’ battlefields from 1915. As part of this, in March students on one of our tours will take part in the official government centenary commemorative events at the Indian Memorial at Neuve Chapelle.

 CPD…

On 27th January we will hold the first of our 2015 CPD events and have an exciting series of sessions planned included keynote speaker, Taff Gillingham. Two days later we will also be trailing a CPD event with the Ormiston Academy group, working with teachers from across all of its schools to prepare them for their bespoke tour in March. Further academy group events are planned for later in 2015.

We are also currently developing two new online CPD modules in partnership with the Imperial War Museums and the Lives of the First World War project. These interactive modules will support teacher development and introduce some new ideas supporting the teaching of the First World War both in and outside the classroom.

Teacher Ambassadors…

Summer 2015 will see the formal launch of our ‘teacher ambassador’ scheme. Already there has been a great deal of interest in this from teachers and we look forward to appointing our first ambassadors be the end of the summer term. We are currently developing our ideas for this programme and it is really starting to take shape and will present some very exciting opportunities for teachers.

Podcasts and an app…

2015 will also see the launch of a new series of podcasts and a dedicated programme battlefields app. A number of podcasts have already been commissioned and are being created by experts on a wide range of topics associated with the First World War. The first of these should be available on the website soon. We also hope to have the latest version of our battlefield app ready in time for the spring tours. This is being developed inpartnership with Ballista Media and promises to bring a new approach to digital learning on the battlefields. Do keep checking the website as we plan to keep adding new ideas, materials and resources all the time.
